Brief description


This oral course, conducted through the medium of German, examines the way in which Germans see themselves and their own experience, in the context of political and social development from 1945 to the present day. The two sections of the module will concentrate on: (i) Ost-ins Westdeutsche nach der Vereinigung; (ii) Frauen in Deutschland.

Students are advised to read as many of the Recommended Background texts as is feasible, during the intercalary year.

Learning outcomes


On completion of this module students should have extended their knowledge of modern German by having focused on German reactions to certain major events of the period under discussion, and by having participated actively in structured language work. This should have improved their skills in the register of academic discourse. The outcome: enhanced knowledge, oral fluency at a high level, developed presentation skills.
