Brief description

This course will examine a range of cultural texts and artefacts in order to introduce students to the development of German society between 1945-1990. Through the prism of literature, film and linguistics, students will explore the division of Germany, developments in the GDR and FRG as well as the issues surrounding the unification of 1990. In so doing students will not only gain a detailed knowledge of the politics and culture of the period, but also increase their competence as critical 'readers' of culture.

Learning outcomes

Students should feel that they have a good, detailed knowledge of the development of German culture between 1945-1990. They should have further developed their skills as critical readers of culture, and those students who wish to go on with their studies should feel that they have a solid foundation for postgraduate research.
