Brief description

This module provides a discussion of the concept of ideology and a detailed analysis of specified ideologies (e.g. liberalism, conservatism and anarchism) and thinkers (e.g. Locke, Burke and Bakunin).

Aims

The aims of this course are to introduce the student to the use and critical appraisal of some of the principal texts in political thought in the late modern era. This will be done through the study of the problem of ideology and the investigation of a distinct number of ideologies such as liberalism, nationalism, conservatism, fascism, socialism, and anarchism.

Objectives

To ensure that the student:

has a grasp of the concept of ideology.
is acquainted with three or more political ideologies.
is able to evaluate an original text in political theory.
is capable of putting forward and appraising a political argument.
