Aims

The module aims to provide an in-depth examination of the theory and practice of EU policy-making. The module will look at the way in which groups mobilize to become involved in EU policy formation, the role of EU supranational institutions and the interaction of political actors from different territorial levels. Particular attention is directed towards analysis of policy-making on EU single market issues and in relation to economic and monetary union. The module also covers policy making in environmental, regional, competition, fisheries, agricultural and other key EU policy areas.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to

Critically evaluate different theories and concepts of EU governance
Apply theories and concepts in different areas of EU policy-making
Develop a knowledge of the main objectives and instruments employed to implement a variety of EU policies
Analyse the role and interrelationships between political actors at different territorial levels in the EU decision-process.
Apply and develop key transferable skills, including written and oral communication skills.
