Brief description


The aim of this advanced module is to consolidate already acquired basic skills, increasing competence in both the spoken and written language through oral, aural and written practice of the language. The course will include translation into and out of the target language, comprehension of different registers of Italian and free composition, and will make use of the advanced technological facilities available in the Department: video, computerised language laboratory, satellite television.

Learning outcomes


By the end of the module, if you have made satisfactory progress, you will be able to:


- identify an increase in your own skills in independent language study since A level
- describe and demonstrate the improvement in your linguistic knowledge and skills since A level
- demonstrate your interest in and understanding of the Italian language as a subject of study
- display proficiency in basic Italian grammar and syntax
- translate selected passages from and into Italian
- point out different registers of written Italian
- use a range of linguistic structures
- communicate in written Italian at a standard appropriate to Level 1
- produce summaries of material written in Italian
- use a relatively extensive Italian vocabulary
- give your own insights into key aspects of Italian society
- make both supervised and independent use of the facilities available in the department: video, language laboratory, satellite television


Language modules have, as an integral part of their structure, regular homework assignments and class tests as well as end of year examinations. All assessment is designed to measure your progress against learning outcomes at the appropriate level.
