Examine the important implications of parasites and apply this to the animal's advantage.
Performance criteria:
a. Different types of parasites and their lifecycles are identified.
b. The effect of parasites is examined.
c. Methods of control are evaluated and a scheme to eradicate/control specific parasites is implemented.

Internal and external parasites
Coldblooded, warmblooded and hotblooded horses

Outcome 2
Identification of equine disorders and their causes.   
Performance criteria:
a. The causes of the diseases of the major body systems are examined.
b. The prevention of diseases of the major body systems are examined.
c. The cure of diseases of the major body systems are identified.
d. The implications of such diseases are recognised.
e. When to call for veterinary assistance is identified.
f. The principles of First Aid for the horse are appreciated.

Diseases of the mouth, respiratory tract, digestive system, circulatory system and nervous system.

Identification of the requirement for veterinary assistance.
Performance criteria:
a. When to call for veterinary assistance is identified.
b. The principles of first aid for the horse are appreciated.
c. The contents of an equine first aid kit are discussed

Investigation of equine musculo-skeletal disorders   
Performance criteria:
a. The general causes of lameness and their prevention and cure are listed.
b. The role of foot balance and shoeing as a cause of lameness is investigated.
c. Methods used in the diagnosis of lameness are examined.

Module description


In order to effectively participate, as well as advise, in the care and management of the horse, it is essential that students appreciate the factors associated with the health and disease of animals. This module integrates with Horsemastership and develops the core theme - custodianship of the horse.
