Outcome 1


Identify the structure, composition and function of the EU.


Performance criteria:
a. Main organisational structure and function of the EU is described.
b. Main aims and provisions of major EU treaties are identified.
c. Major policies are described.


Ranges:
Organisational Structure - European Commission, European Parliament, European Council, European Court of Justice, Council of Ministers, Court of Auditors, Committee of the Regions.
Organisational Function - Budget, Decision making, Legislative, Overseas aid, Finance.
Major Treaties - Rome, Single European Act, Maastricht and subsequent treaties, EMU.
Major Policies - CAP, Regional, Environmental.
Impacts - Four Freedoms, goods, people, services, capital.


Outcome 2


Identify the lifestyle and geographical characteristics opf a selected EU member state.


Performance criteria:
a. Geographical characteristics are identified.
b. Culture and customs are identified.


Ranges:
Geology, Geomorphology, communications, climate, water, land resources.


Outcome 3


Evaluate the structure and function of an aspect of countryside management within a selected EU member state.


Performance criteria:
a. Structure and function is identified.
b. Past, current and future trends are identified.
c. Organisational structures are described.


Ranges:
Agriculture, forestry, tourism, recreation, archaeology, landscape, nature conservation, fisheries, environmental protection, planning minerals.
Designations, NGO, statutory.


Outcome 4


Evaluate the influence of the EU on the environment of a selected member state.


Performance criteria:
a. Relevant policy and legislation is identified.
b. Implementation is evaluated.
c. Relevant organisational structures are described.


Ranges:
European regulations, directives, recommendations, policies, grants, funding, mechanisms, Environmental Action Programmes, National legislation, policy, European Court of Justice, NGO's.

Module description


To benefit from and contribute to European citizenship it is vital that the influence that the EU has on life and work are understood. The EU is increasingly an important influence in creating change in the land based industries. Future opportunities and threats must be considered in order to achieve effective decision making.
