Syllabus / Curriculum design


The course will consist of 20 lectures, 4 seminars/tutorials and 3 supporting practicals. The course will apply equine reproductive physiology and anatomy to the management of the mare, stallion and young stock. Initial lectures will concentrate on the selection of breeding stock followed by preparation and covering of equines. Management of the pregnant mare, the mare at parturition and the mare during lactation will be considered along with management of the neonate. Manipulation of the oestrus cycle, induction of parturition, the use of AI and ET will also be included. The practical sessions will involve visits to studs plus a semen evaluation practical. The seminars/tutorials will provide a means by which students can begin to develop knowledge through self study and critically assess research work done.

Aims of the module


To ensure that the student has adequate knowledge to make informed decisions or to discuss management practices used today in stud farm medicine. To provide a solid basis of knowledge to allow a student to develop a specialist interest in equine stud farm medicine.

Learning outcomes


On completion of the module, students will be able to:


i)   make informed decisions about the use of modern reproductive technology techniques in equine stud management;


ii)   discuss the various management systems used in stud management with a knowledge of their advantages and disadvantages;


iii)   make an informed decision on the selection of breeding stock based on reproductive competence;


iv)   follow and understand current areas of research in equine stud medicine;


v)   be aware of the major factors determining the success of equine reproduction and man's influence on success rates.
