Brief description
The study of life painting both as a personal experience and as a subject matter within the figurative tradition of picture-making including the study of light, tone and colour. A greater emphasis is placed on the use of the model for personal study and as a compositional device.
Aims:
The course aims to:
-
provide an initial course for studies in life painting at Level 2 giving further experience in working from the life model and to enhance the student's knowledge of the concepts and processes of life painting.

assist the student in developing an approach to the figure which is applicable to his/her other studio work
-
develop an understanding of the way that different methods of and approaches to painting can be used as a means of fully exploring the potential of the nude as a subject
-
provide a context in which the student has scope for the personal development of concepts and techniques within a supportive environment

foster a creative and innovative application of technical facility through the development of a personal programme of studies that arises out of previous experience in the life class

develop a comprehension of the continuing relevance of historical and contemporary techniques of and approaches to figure painting and how they may be adapted
Objectives:
By the end of the course the student will possess:

a greater knowledge of the processes of life painting

a personal approach to the figure which has developing relevance and application to his/her other studio work

a growing awareness of the role that life painting has in contemporary art practice amongst artists both in this country and abroad

an analytical and critical approach and take initiative in assessing the work, defining problems, and devising a plan of action based upon that assessment
-
knowledge of a variety of different technical solutions and drawing media explored in the process of life painting.
