Aims

The aims of the module are:

- To deepen students' familiarity with the French Neo-classical drama of Racine and Moliere.
- To broaden students' awareness of English Restoration comedy through a study of selected texts.
- To challenge commonly held assumptions about how the plays were originally staged and performed and the audiences? response to them.
- To explore the challenges of deconstructing and/or reinterpreting these texts for modern audiences.

Learning Outcomes:

Typically, by the end of the module, a student will be able:

- To develop the ability to analyse texts in their historical and theatrical context.
- To develop the ability to discuss seminal texts in detail, both on paper and through oral means.
- To develop the requisite communication and oral presentation skills in order to allow him/her to do so.
- To co-operate as part of a group in presenting an argument in the analysis of course material.

Content:

A study of selected texts and investigation in to the social, historical, political and theatrical contexts of the plays chosen. In seminars and occasional practical workshops, students will consider the challenges facing practitioners today when attempting to realise the texts in performance.
