Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students should be able to :-

demonstrate a detailed appreciation of the major legislative and policy changes which have underscored the development of housing and planning provision in Britain;

demonstrate an awareness of the changing nature of urban and inner-city policy in Britain;

appreciate the ways in which national and local processes combine to affect state intervention in any particular place;

evaluate critically a range of conceptual and theoretical ideas regarding local politics;

demonstrate skills in verbal and written presentation and communication.

Aims
The module aims to examine the contemporary and historical development of state intervention in the urban arena, concentrating on the areas of housing, urban policy and planning policy. In so doing the course seeks to analyse critically the reasons for, and limits to, state intervention in urban development, stressing the interaction between local, national and broader international political processes.
