Brief description

Recent work on the medieval peasantry of England and Wales has described the experience of the peasantry as rather more varied and self-determined than was once assumed to be the case. This course sets out to explore some of these developments and to propose further avenues of investigation, including some consideration of the relationship of rural dwellers with the church in the period. In attempting to illustrate the vallue of bringing a combination of source types to bear on an historical problem, it will employ a range of sources both local and national, literary, legal, governmental, and archaeological.
