Learning outcomes

After taking this module students should be able to:

participate in the organisztion of a small team working on a set project.
carry out tasks relevant to the project. Each member of a group will normally work on different tasks, but the group must also work collectively so that each member is aware of what others are doing.
present their results both orally and in written accounts.

Brief description

This module takes the form of a group project. Individual students within a small group investigate parallel aspects of an experimental problem. Methods of presenting results will include oral presentations and an individual written report.

Content

In industry or research several individuals may work on different, but related, aspects of a problem to produce an answer in a limited time. The laboratory based group projects of this module are intended to reflect what often happens in the wider world of research and industrial physics. Each student works on a task in a group normally comprising 3-5 members. The actual organisation of the work and the division of responsibilities between the members is left to each group, but it is expected that individual members work on different aspects of the project. Presentation of the work again reflects methods used in the wider world, and each student is expected to keep a laboratory diary noting the day-to-day progress of the project, produce a formal written report emphasising their contribution to the project, and give a short oral presentation describing their work.

Details of each project will be provided by the project supervisor at the start of the module.
