3. be able to appreciate the complexity of decision-making in the diversification of rural Britain.

Content

The module will be undertaken during the first week of the summer vacation following the second year.

Students are expected to select a county, or other area of comparable size, describe its geographical, social, cultural and economic features, visit farms and businesses related to farming, describe these and relate them to the area in which they are located.

The approach throughout should be analytical, critical and evaluative and contain a thorough review of appropriate literature (after consultation with the module co-ordinator as to what might be termed 'appropriate') in the light of choice of location/business.

The report will be fully referenced in accordance with the Harvard System.

Aims

This module gives students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the interrelationship between farm, rural business, landscape and the community and the importance both of integration and diversification within the rural areas of Britain.
