Brief description

Hispanic Civilization provides a foundation knowledge and enriches the context in which the language is learnt. It concentrates on key phases in Spanish history: The Reconquest of Spain, The Hapsburg Kings, The Defeat of the Spanish Armada, the Rise of Liberalism and the origins of the Spanish Civil War.

The course also considers the work of three major painters (with slides): El Greco, Goya and Velazquez.

In addition, two modern works are considered in detail: Bernardo Atxaga's 'The Lone Woman' and Ken Loach' film on the Spanish civil War, Land and Freedom.
