Learning outcomes

Students will have a good awareness of the sociopolitical issues and problems that beset Spain at the turn of the century and will be familiar with responses to this in the work of three major writers. They will have developed their linguistic and literary skills.

Brief description

The module deals with Spanish society and politics at the end of the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth century; the corruption of 'el turno pacifico', the defeat by the United States in the Cuban War, the consequent 'prolema de Espana' and the concern for the regeneration of Spain. Students read selected texts that illustrate this key phase in modern Spanish history and thought. [This module is especially recommended for students who were Beginners at Level 1.]
