Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the history and traditions of production and reception that define the way music can be 9and has been) used in film and television.
Critically examine particular uses of music in film and television, with respect to production processes, the textual contribution of music and its contribution to reception.
Brief description
This course will be concerned with the historical development of film and television as a distinct aesthetic element in film and television. It will look into production strategies, commercial, promotional and reception concerns and the place of musical accompaniment in audiovisual products. This will include, among others, lecture sessions focusing on the development of Classical Hollywood film music, the Classical Musical film, television incidental music and MTV.
