Brief description
Brief description
The aim of the course is to examine selected topics and artists whose work has addressed issues of gender and identity. The course follows on from Art and Society 1 which deals with non western art and its social context although the material in this course is considered studied independently. The course introduces students to some of the current debates around gender, post-colonialism and representation and examines in detail the work of selected artists. Some of the classes will focus on particular exhibitions which have addressed these issues. Topics include: Gender and representation in Weimar Germany; Post colonial identities in South America/ Latin America; North America: Black American/ Native American strategies; Contemporary African Identities; Black art in Britain; Post Colonial Identity in Southern Africa; Indigenous Identities- Jimmy Durham/ Frida Kahlo/Eugenio; Dittborn; A Woman's View; Ethnic Minority in the UK;Masculine Masquerade.
