Brief description
The curriculum for Printmaking 1 plus: special projects in printmaking. Teaching is by tutorials with the emphaisis on the use of methods and materials and the acquisition of techniques and the practicalities of exhibiting.
Aims:
The aim of the module is to effectively introduce the students to the possibilities and potential of printmaking to provide a significant means for the development and production of images in a graphic and multiple form. The students are encouraged to become critically aware of both the limitations and potential of each of the processes used as illustrated by examples of work from the University collection and also from their own experience of working in the medium.
The module introduces the students to a variety of techniques employed in both intaglio and screen-printing and encourages students to develop good working practice within a print workshop environment.
Students are required from the outset of the module to identify themes or subject matter that is of personal interest to them that can be suitably developed by exploitation of techniques and procedures found in printmaking.

To provide a sound technical grounding in the materials used and techniques employed for making both intaglio prints and screen prints.

To introduce students to the possibilities and potential of printmaking as a means for extending the artist?s technical vocabulary.

To introduce students to original works of art from the University?s collection to enable them to identify qualities specific to each medium and to broaden their knowledge of the work of past and contemporary exponents of printmaking practice.

To promote independent and self-directed study, building upon the skills learned in one or more areas covered by the course, to produce a suite of editioned prints.

To encourage the students to develop subject matter that is of specific and significant interest to them through the processes of printmaking and to make links with work that is being completed in other areas of working practice.

To introduce students to safe working practices and to make them aware of health and safety issues.
Objectives:
By the completion of the module students will have:

Become proficient and confident at plate making, stencil preparation and editioning.

Created prints that demonstrates an understanding of and a consideration for the limitations and creative potential of the medium used.

Considered the statement made and its relationship to the print process employed.

Developed subject matter that is of specific and significant interest to them and to have made technical and conceptual connections with work being completed in other modules ? as appropriate.

The capacity to identify the medium and processes involved in the production of a wide range of prints.

Developed a capacity for self-directed study and a critical awareness of their own activity in printmaking
