Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
demonstrate a clear understanding of the social, cultural and aesthetic perspectives of gender representations in theatre and performance.

evaluate and respond to a range of gender discourses in theatre and theory, using a critical and analytical vocabulary.

co-operate as part of a group in presenting an argument drawing on the analysis of course material

Aims

To develop students? critical appreciation of gender representations in theatre and to introduce them to key issues of gender theory in relation to theatre and performance.
To examine theatrical representations of gender in a selection of dramatic and performance texts from Shakespeare to the 21st century.

Brief description

This module will develop students? critical appreciation of gender representations in theatre and introduce them to key issues of gender theory in relation to theatre and performance through a detailed study of a number of dramatic and performance texts from Shakespeare to the 21st century.
Indicative lectures might be:

3. Gender relationships in Restoration Theatre
4. Images of Women in Theatre/History
5. Staging Feminism(s)
6. Staging Masculinities
7. Gay and Lesbian Theatre
