On completing this module, students should (1) have an understanding of some of the important soil processes which influence soil profile development and characteristics; (2) have gained knowledge about certain environmental issues which centre around soils and their utilisation.

On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of:-

the process of podzolisation

the implications of soil degradation and world food production

techniques for the restoration of degraded soils
Aims
(1) To give students core knowledge regarding some of the more important aspects of the processes operative within soils. (2) To enable students to appreciate the importance of soils, and their vulnerability to degradation.
Content
The module will primarily concern itself with the U.K. environment, although to further student knowledge examples elsewhere will be considered whenever appropriate. Certain aspects of soil chemistry and geology will need to be considered, although these will be given minimal treatment wherever possible. The themes covered in this module will be taken from the following list:

Gleying and hydromorphic soils.

Soil organic matter. Organic soils.

Salinization. Salinic soils.
