Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students will have a sound grasp of surrealist ideas (corresponding to Andr Breton''s First and especially his Second Manifesto of Surrealism) as these are applied and refined in the works of the listed Spanish poets and painters.

Aims

A study of the development of surrealist ideas in Spain, from its cathartic (Freudian) beginnings to its metaphysical (Hegelian)
quest for the surrealist object and its final flourishing in materialism or (Marxist) political commitment. Special attention is paid
to Andre Breton's Manifestoes and to the cross-fertilization of ideas between art and poetry.
