Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an appreciation of Spanish films of the period in relation to the social and political context.
2. Show an awareness and understanding of teh metaphorical language of film-making that was developed by dissident film-makers as a response to censorship and oppression.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of teh potential of film as a political and subversive art form.
4. Express an awareness of film technique as related to the metaphorical language of dissident film-making in Spain.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the issues and debates relating to the development of culture in Spain during teh dictatorship.

Brief description

1. To examine the evolution of the cinema during the dictatorship (1939-1975) of General Franco.
2. To trace and analyse the emergence of a dissident film movement as a response to the state-backed Francoist cinema. This development will be analysed against a background of the social and political changes in Spain and will require specific reference to the metaphorical films of Juan Antonio Bardem, Luis Garcia Berlanga, Luis Bunuel, Carlos Saura and teh producer Elias Querejeta.
3. To study the evolution of Spanish culture under duress of the fascist dictatorship.
