Brief description

This module is also a School of Art Elective. This course amalgamates the two Land Art courses and is taught on Saturdays through the year. It is designed to produce artwork in relation to the natural environment through both group activities and self-generated projects. By focusing on specific environments students will develop in their aesthetic and conceptual responses, their understanding of place and the qualities of natural materials. The module aims to develop awareness of the discipline within a range of contextual discourses: contemporary art since 1950; the wider historical perspective of artistic response to nature and landscape; recent political/social/scientific developments in understanding of the environment. Topics will cover:- Defining Landscape: an introduction to landscape theory and debates; Art and the Environment- a survey of the rise of Land Art and current practice; American and British Practitioners from Smithson to Richard Long; Mapping the Landscape: debate and discussion focusing on experiencing, recording and documenting the landscape.
This course is open to Continuing Education students as well as students from the School of Art. It will be run as a series of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Students will need to provide their own transport, although we will try and arrange lift sharing at the first meeting.
