On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
devise and manage an acquisitions policy
be familiar with the principles of appraisal, weeding, sampling and de-accessioning
be familiar with the development of the principles of archival description at an international and UK level
have an in-depth knowledge of current international and national descriptive standards specifically ISAD(G), ISAAR and the NCA Rules and to be able to apply these standards in practice
be aware of current developments in the area of networking and of the implications of electronic data exchange
Brief description
The development of acquisition policies, the principles of appraisal, arrangement and archival description (international and UK) and their practical application are all considered in this module, and individual skill is developed. Archival resources available on the Internet are explored and the necessary searching techniques established. Current developments in networking and the implications of electronic data exchange are also evaluated, together with the impact of specialist archive management software.
