Aims
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the diverse fields of social and cultural geography.
Content
Focusing on the themes of identity, landscape and representation, this module will critically examine some of the key issues and debates that have defined social and cultural geography and preoccupy its current practitioners. In doing so, students will read both theoretical works and empirical studies of particular landscapes and places, and explore geographical engagement with a variety of mediums including texts, images, music, film, and TV.
The module is divided into three parts. Part 1 asks the question `what are social and cultural geographies?? We will look at the separate histories of social and cultural geography and show how they have come to be thought of as one field. Part 2 explores some of the central themes of social and cultural geography ? particularly the concept of `landscape?, and the social categories of `race? and gender. Part 3 focuses on some recent work in social and cultural geography, bringing our survey of the sub-discipline right up to date. These themes are cultures of nature, the body and music.
