Brief description

The aim of the course is to examine selected topics and artists whose work has addressed issues of gender and identity. The period covered is 1920 to the present time with an emphasis on contemporary art. The course follows on from Art and Society 1 which deals with non western art and its social context and much of the material in this course looks at artists who are identified with ethnic minorities in the dominant culture - black, latino or Native American. The course also covers artist whose work addresses gender, feminist and gay issues and introduces students to some of the current debates around gender, post-colonialism and representation by examining the work of selected artists and exhibitions.
