Brief description
An Introduction to Environmental Management Systems : the subject of general management systems will be introduced.
We shall then examine the structure and content of Environmental Management Systems and how these relate to
Environmental Impact Assessment. these lectures will explain the need for businesses to manage and control their
environmental impacts
EMAS and ISO14001 : two environmental management systems are of particular importance, not only in the Uk but also
mainland Europe and the rest of the world. These are the EU's Eco-management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and the
International Environmental Management Standard, ISO 14001. These two schemes and the certification processes
associated with them will be discussed over a number of lectures
Environmental Audit Procedure : the self-teach part of the module centres on how environmental audits are undertaken
in practice. Over the years, a generalised environmental audit procedure has evolved, which the majority of audits
follow. This section covers planning.
Types of Environmental Audit : the generic term 'environmental audit' descibes a wide range of different activities and
procedures, all of which are associated with environmental auditing but which have a different focus and scope. This
final set of lectures will highlight the differences between the different types of audit and give details of what is involved
in the audits most often encountered.
Aims
To familiarise students with the main concepts associated with Environmental Auditing and Environmental
Management Systems; to introduce the European Union's Eco-management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and
the International Standard ISO 14001
