Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

describe the fundamental concepts of continuum mechanics and, in particular, explain the difference between solids and liquids.
make use of a tensorial framework, and explain its advantages.
derive the governing equations for a Newtonian viscous fluid and solve tham exactly for some simple flows.

Brief description

This module provides an introduction to Newtonian Fluid Mechanics.

Aims

To introduce the basic concepts of solid and fluid mechanics and to set up the governing equations for a Newtonian viscous fluid. To provide a number o exact solutions of these governing equations.

INTRODUCTION TO CONTINUUN MECHANICS: Including the distinction between Solids and Fluids.
DERIVATION OF THE NAVIER-STOKES EQUATIONS FOR NEWTONIAN VISCOUS FLUIDS: Like water and air.
SOLUTION OF FLOW PROBLEMS AND APPLICATIONS TO THE SCIENCE OF FLIGHT.
