Learning outcomes

On completion of the module, the student will be able to:

1.   Understand the interaction of hormones with cells


Understand the definitions of growth curves for pre- and post-natal development

Understand the endocrine control of adiposity

Understand the endocrine control of growth.

Brief description

This module begins with a discussion of the patterns of growth and development of the liveweight, carcass tissues and major organs of animals. The effects of breed, sex, nutrition and exercise are considered. Subsequently, the role of growth hormone and the IGF family of proteins in growth and lactation in the horse will be discussed. Control of feed intake and the regulation of body adiposity will also be examined.

Aims

This module aims to provide the student with a basic understanding of the control of vital regulatory processes in the horse. It will also consider the control of growth and patterns of growth along with the factors affecting development.

Module Skills

Communication Students will be required to demonstrate their written and oral communication skills through writing a paper and giving it as a seminar presentation.  
Information Technology Students are required to produce a paper and use Powerpoint to present their findings in a seminar.
