Semester Assessment The Writing Project. Your project may consist of: - a substantial collection of poems to be between 2.500-3,000 words in length - short fiction, eg, a substantial piece of prose fiction or two shorter pieces of prose fiction, or one piece of prose fiction and short stories, experimental pieces, tales or a collection of short stories, experimental pieces, tales, to total 4,000 words - a collection of poetry and short fiction - a completed screenplay - in every case your project must contain a critical commentary on your own poetics and/or writing practice (approximately 1,500-2.00 words), with any relevant bibliographical details 100%
Supplementary Assessment Resubmit any failed elements and/or make good any missing elements. Where this involves re-submission of work, a new topic must be selected. 

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module students will typically be able to:

1. demonstrate an ability to address the techniques and styles of their chosen genre(s);

2. present their work in ways which reveal an awareness of professional standards for the submission of scripts;

3. demonstrate an ability to contextualise and evaluate their writing.

Aims

This module aims:

1. to provide students with the opportunity for a sustained, long-term personal engagement with a major writing task;

2. to enable students to demonstrate both their writing skills and their ability to reflect critically on their own writing practice.

Brief description

The Writing Project is central to the English and Creative Writing Degree and provides students with the experience of sustained, long-term personal engagement with a major writing task. Students will have regular individual tutorials, five or six sessions in all, throughout the semester, and will be encouraged to submit draft material for discussion.

Content

The project may consist of:

1. a collection of poems of approximately 2,000 words in length, OR

2. one piece of prose fiction totalling approximately 4,000 words in length, OR

3. two shorter pieces of prose fiction, to a total of approximately 4,000 words, OR

4. a combination of poetry and prose fiction, to a total of approximately 4,000 words.

IN ADDITION, the project must include a critical commentary on the student's own poetic and/or fiction-writing practice with relevant bibliographical details (a FURTHER 1,500 to 2,000 words).
