Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. draw subjects from a variety of themes with greater facility and authority
2. draw in a variety of mediums on a variety of scales
3. adopt an exploratory response that seeks to define and push the boundaries of concepts and approaches to drawing
4. apply and develop technical skills in the context of self-initiated and self-directed work
5. develop powers of judgment with which to critique their own and other'r work
6. develop and implement a realistic programme of personal work that reflects a capacity to originate and execute ideas with due concern to qualities of craftsmanship, draughtsmanship and concept.

Brief description

This module is intended to give the student a broader experience of drawing across a diverse range of subject matter. It augments the teaching of drawing skills being given in AR10120 Art Practice 1 in the context of the life class, extending the student¿s experience of graphic representation and offering a different kind of subject and approach (and/or further experience of figure drawing if the student so chooses). One of the benefits of this module will be to teach students in smaller groups than is practical in AR10120 and to facilitate a greater degree of choice in subject matter. As such it forms part of a progression towards Level 2 art practice.

Aims

This module incorporates and extends the content of AR10320 and gives the student more choice of drawing topics. It also enables more members of art practice staff to contribute to first year teaching if required.

Content

The teaching semester will be divided into TWO five-week sections and students will choose FOUR topics (TWO in each five week period) from a number of options. There will normally be at least FOUR topics available to choose from in each five-week section (subject to student numbers). The following list of options is indicative (Life Drawing is to be offered as two separate options):Figure Drawing 1, Figure Drawing 2, Still Life, Landscape, Interiors, Portraiture, Anatomical Drawing, IllustrationThe core syllabus is common to all the subject areas of drawing that are offered and taught in AR10520. This core element of the module is divided into FOUR subject areas and given by means of lectures (4 x one-hour lectures/demonstrations) to all students enrolled on the module. The content of these lectures comprises: 1. Process, 2. Scale, 3. Composition, 4. Abstraction and will be applied to the subject areas chosen by the student through a number of prescribed and drawing projects taught by the respective tutor(s). Students will receive tuition by means of 2 x three-hour per week practical sessions and group and individual tutorials. In addition students will be expected to undertake self-directed project work.
