Aims

The module aims to develop communication and professional skills in a flexible teaching environment. The major goals are to increase individual's effectiveness and to improve employability. The module will also provide training relevant to assessments within other modules, including the Masters dissertation.

Content

Various formats of scientific reporting will be considered including theses, literature reviews, submissions for targeted publications and poster presentations. In addition, good practice in oral presentations will be described specifically the use of audio-visual aids and planning presentations. Effective team working skills will be developed through role playing exercises and the production of personalised team skills profiles. Opportunities for career advice and options will be provided in addition to training in Health and Sefety issues.

This module will also address issues such as project management (work scheduling, setting objectives and deadlines, budgeting and record keeping) and include some focus on the roles and responsibilites of student and supervisors. It will also consider public perception of science, commercialisation of scientific findings (e.g. technology transfer and intellectual copyright) and scientific ethics (e.g. plagiarism) and the role of regulatory bodies.
