Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. channel their creative energy with purpose by accomplishing specific scripting tasks
2. use their personal experience as a source of ideas
3. develop an idea into a draft of dramatic activity
4. create imaginary characters and give them a suitable voice
5. demonstrate skills of creating monologues and dialogues
6. collaborate to select material in order to draw up a script as a group
7. demonstrate suitable marketing skills for identifying an audience for their work

Content

The module will comprise of 6 x 2 hour sessions and 2 x 4 hour sessions
Session 1: Searching and finding inspiration
Session 2: Responding to various stimuli
Session 3: Developing an idea into a draft and incorporating that draft in the form of a dramatic activity
Session 4: Creating characters
Session 5: Giving characters voice and the freedom to speak to each other
Session 6: Choosing material to create a short script in collaboration
Session 7: Drawing up a script in collaboration
Session 8: Introducing and planning effective methods of giving potential employers a taste of the work

Brief description

The module will introduce the students to a number of the basic skills which are relevant to the craft of scripting plays, such as response to stimulus, organising time, centering on specific tasks within a set timetable, planning and preparation skills, skills in drawing up monologues and dialogues, the craft of creating characters, revising and editing skills, and responding positively to external criticism.

Module Skills

Problem_solving This skill will be developed as the students get to grips with the problem of finding and maintaining inspiration for writing  
Research skills This skill will be developed as the students search for suitable background material to act as a stimulus for an original script  
Communication This skill will be developed as students draw up characters and give them their voices and they work as a group, collaborating on putting the script together  
Improving own Learning and Performance This skill will be developed as students offer commentary on each other's work and as they edit and revise work  
Team work This skill will be developed as the students work together during two intense sessions to put the script together  
Information Technology This skill will be developed by using the internet as a source for background material and research  
Personal Development and Career planning This skill will be developed as students draw up a small portfolio which will present their joint work as well as the personal strengths and interests which grew during the process of taking the module.
