Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Identify and evaluate a range of issues affecting the management of the countryside of Wales

2. Identify and evaluate the policy and management approaches taken by land management agencies towards the management of countryside capital

3. Critically assess the practices of a range of management agencies (dependent on scheme of study)

Brief description

This 10 credit module will be based upon five full day trips to countryside sites in Wales to allow in depth study of the issues associated with the management of countryside capital and to evaluate the policies and management methods used.   Some of the visits will be integrative and cover the whole spectrum of countryside management whilst others will allow students to specialize in conservation or recreation areas related to their degree titles.   So for example, students studying BSc Countryside Conservation will have several days of conservation specific visits and will be able to gear their assignment in a conservation direction.   The study tour will be based in Aberystwyth and will occur in the week before term starts in September. The module will be credited to semester 1

Content

Each student will attend five one day visits to countryside sites around Wales. The visits will be designed to address the following content areas:
Access; visitor management; interpretation; environmental education; protected area management; species conservation; habitat conservation; landscape; rural community development; economic development.

Module Skills

Research skills Students will be required to carry out detailed research as part of the assignment  
Communication Written communication will be developed through the assignment. Developed and assessed. Verbal communication will be developed during the visits- developed but not assessed  
Information Technology The assignment should be word processed and student will need to use IT to research and present their findings  
Application of Number Analysis and presentation of data may be involved as appropriate to visits  
Personal Development and Career planning Visits will include meetings with organisations and individuals directly involved with countryside careers
