1) a knowledge of key Spanish literary movements from the traditional ballads to modern times
2) specific knowledge of three key Spanish texts

Brief description

This module provides a survey of the key events and topics of Spanish and Latin American history and literature. You will study a list of five general historical and cultural topics: Medieval Spain, discovery and conquest of the Americas, Golden Age Spain, modern and contemporary Spain and modern and contemporary Latin America. You will also study four literary texts in depth: the Romancero viejo, a collection of medieval ballads; La vida del Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades, a Spanish Golden-Age picaresque novel; Campos de Castilla, a collection of twentieth-century poems by the Spanish poet Antonio Machado; and 'Los pichiciegos', a contemporary short story by the Argentine Rodolfo Fogwill.
