Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
Understand how the way that different working models of theatre, its values, associations and its relationship to society reflect and manifest inconclusive contextual arguments.

Aims

To examine the manufacture and negotiations of various immediate (Western, and mainly British) definitions of theatre, society, their relationship, their agendas and the interests they serve.

Content

Topics considered will include Community and Popular Theatre, Catastrophist Theatre, National Theatres, Theatre and Oppression, Gay Theatre, Women's Theatre, Theatre-in-Education, Theatre and Minority Cultures, and Third Theatre. The course will expect students to pursue original theoretical reflection and exploration.
