On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
On completion of the course students will:

Understand the role of environmental economics and how it fits within the overall economics paradigm
Have familiarity with the central problems of environmental policy-making, particularly measurement and valuation
Be able to assess the relevance of the 'limits to growth' thesis
Understand the interpretation of pollution as an example of market failure
Know the meaning of resource scarcity and how to measure it
Be able to assess the relative merits of government regulation and market incentives as methods of environmental management
Understand the central role of equity concerns within environmental economics
Be able to assess the effect of global free trade on the environment
Have familiarity with progress made in international agreements on environment protection

Aims

The aim of the course is to give students an introduction to the sub-discipline of environmental economics and to introduce a planetary perspective to their understanding of other major economics topics.
