Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate an effective knowledge and understanding of the historical developments of the Education system in England and Wales.

Discuss and assess the historical developments of the education system in England and Wales;

Apply their own educational experiences to the broader contexts of social and political change within the education system;

Show an awareness of current education issues and discuss the significance of such issues within the political context.

Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate educational policies and current education issues .

Demonstrate an ability of forming coherent arguments in discussing current education issues.

Demonstrate an ability of applying their own educational experiences to the broader contexts of social an political change within the Education systems.
Brief description
This module provides an introduction to education policies and issues in England and Wales. It sets current education policy in the historic context of educational developments and change, whilst introducing some major contemporary education issues.

3. The Education Acts of 1944 and 1988
4. Control, Choice and Accountability
5. New Labour Education Policies in England and Wales
6. Issue 1: Educational Standards
7. Issue 2: Wales: Nationality, Culture and Schooling
8. Issue 3: Three Topical Controversies (Healthy Eating in Schools, Single-Sex Teaching and Special Educational Needs)
9. Issue 4: 16-19 Curriculum
10. Issue 5: Gender and Education
