Semester Assessment ASSESSMENTS OF LESSONS BY SCHOOL STAFF AND AU STAFF 12 assessments of lessons by school staff and 2 assessments of lessons by AU staff. Incorporates scrutiny of student teaching file. In arriving at the final judgement agreement is reached between the school mentor and AU tutor.100%
Supplementary Assessment ADDITIONAL TEACHING PRACTICE IN YEAR FOLLOWING END OF MODULE Failure to complete this assessment satisfactorily may result in students having to do additional teaching practice in the year following the end of the module.100%

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Plan lessons appropriate to the age and stage of a variety of classes;
2. Design and select resources, including ICT, to support lesson planning;
3. Teach classes at various levels;
4. Demonstrate ability in classroom management;
5. Demonstrate professional values.

Content

In this module, the following topics will be discussed in relation to the QTS Standards for practical teaching.
The content themes for both practical teaching placements are the same. Trainees should gain experience of:

1. Motivating and inspiring pupils ensuring that relationships with pupils are based on mutual trust
2. Contributing to the wider school environment and taking responsibility for their continuing professional development
3. Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of their subject
4. Using ICT effectively
5. Implementing class management strategies
6. Planning and preparing resources for effective lessons which are challenging and relevant to all pupils   
7. Teaching lessons which are structured, varied, motivating and interactive
8. Differentiating to meet the needs of all pupils
9. Monitoring, assessing and recording pupils' progress
10. Working with colleagues, taking part in teams and managing the work of other adults to enhance pupils' learning

Brief description

Students spend a total of 25 weeks in school placements. The programme is designed to ensure progression in terms of the balance between observation and actual teaching and in terms of the level of classes taught.

Module Skills

Problem solving Through lesson planning, making material accessible to various classes, preparation of materials.  
Research skills Researching materials for lessons, including bibliographical material, ICT based resources, library resources.  
Communication In teaching lessons and communicating material to pupils; in communicating with colleagues in schools. Communication in writing in the school file.  
Improving own Learning and Performance The teaching practice is designed to enable students to improve their own learning and teaching performance. Evidence of this will be assessed via PDP.  
Team work Working with colleagues in a department, working with other students.  
Information Technology In producing materials and using ICT within lesson preparation and delivery.  
Application of Number In some subject areas this will be more prevalent than in others (e.g. in science and geography classes). (Assessed where appropriate)  
Personal Development and Career planning These are integral to the whole course and are assessed in other modules in the scheme.  
Subject Specific Skills Specific skills will be assessed in individual subjects, as appropriate. For example health and safety in science and drama.
