Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be well based to continue with their study of this field during their year abroad, and ready to embark on the advanced course on the same subject during their fourth year.
Brief description
This module is aimed primaliry at students of Business Studies, Accounting and Computer Science. It offers and introduction to the linguistic registers of business and current affairs, and seeks to provide students with practical vocabulary in such areas as accountancy, banking, stock exchange and the organisation of business enterprises. Use will be made of authentic current affairs materials and the module aims to develop practical written skills including the writing of letters, reports, and summaries.
Work will be based on (a) texts for translation (b) comprehension exercises on economic/political matters (c) a study of an important commercial area (e.g. the wine industry) (d) students' presentations on an approved topic (e.g. the introduction of the euro).
