Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Discuss and analyse developments in the conception of Welsh 'identity' and the Welsh 'nation' in Welsh literature.
2. Describe, analyse and compare some of the main themes in Welsh and Anglo-Welsh literature in the twentieth century.
3. Demonstrate, through written work and seminar discussion, the ability to discuss and evaluate different approaches to the history of the modern Welsh woman.
4. Critically assess and evaluate key issues and themes in Welsh visual culture.
5. Identify images of Wales and its people on film and evaluate the implications of these images to understandings of 'Wales' and 'Welshness'.

Brief description

This module aims to provide an examination of developments in the imaging of Wales in a variety of cultural forms. It discusses perceptions of Welsh identity and the 'nation' in Welsh literature, including Welsh and Anglo-Welsh literature, in the visual arts and images of Wales and its people on film, predominantly from the twentieth century to date.
