Admission Requirements

A minimum of at least an upper second class honours degree is required for a PhD or for any funding. Some departments may require a relevant Masters degree in addition to a Bachelor's degree. Further information is available on the list of postgraduate courses. Please check with the relevant department.

Generally, the minimum requirement for a taught Masters course is a lower second class honours degree. However, some departments may require upper second class honours degrees (e.g. Department of International Politics) or relevant work experience (e.g. for MBA programme). Further information is available on the list of postgraduate courses. Please check with the relevant department.

Non-graduates with at least 24 months of relevant full-time work experience are welcome to apply for any Masters course. Their applications will be judged on an individual basis. They may not however apply for a place on a PGCE course or for a PhD programme.

English language requirements

If you are an international student who's native language is not English, please visit this web-page for further details.

When should I apply?

There is no closing date for applications for postgraduate study although there may be deadlines if you wish to be considered for funding. In most subject areas it is advisable to apply before the end of February if you wish to be considered for a funded place and before the end of July if you are able to fund yourself. The only exception is the MScEcon in Archive Administration where a closing date of 15 December exists for the receipt of applications.

UK and other EU applicants for research places in science subjects should, in the first instance, contact the relevant academic department regarding the availablity of project studentships and deadlines for application.

Those who will be accompanied by their children during their studies at Aberystwyth are advised to apply before 15th January. This should provide enough time to complete the admissions process and make appropriate arrangements for accommodation and childcare.

What happens after I apply?

If your application is complete (i.e. is made on the University application form and has two supporting letters of reference) it will be sent up to the relevant Academic Department on the day we receive it. If your application has no accompanying references we cannot process it and it remains in the Postgraduate Admissions Office until the references are received. In such a case we will send you a letter to say that we are awaiting one or more references.

Applications are considered by departments and you will be informed within six weeks of receipt of your complete application whether:

a) You are to be offered a place
b) You are to be invited for interview
c) We are unable to offer you a place

If you are to be offered a place you will be sent an offer letter setting out the conditions you will need to meet before you can register, the cost of your course and the date on which it starts. You will need to reply to this offer within six weeks and meet the conditions set before registration. For those starting in September, you will also be sent information about Registration and sessions for new postgraduates in August. Please note however that you will not be able to register until you have fulfilled all of the conditions that have been specified in the formal offer letter. Only then can we issue the formal acceptance letter.

Non-EEA students will require student visas in order to study full-time programmes. This can only be done if you have a firm letter of acceptance. The onus is on the student to secure their own visas. Non-EEA PhD and MPhil students in certain science subject will also require an ATAS certificate.

Registration

Registration takes place at the beginning of the session and all full time students are required to attend. Further details about exactly when and where you should register will be sent to you when you have met all the conditions in your offer letter and we know you will be definitely joining us. The "Essential Information for New Postgraduate Students" handbook will be distributed at the plenary meeting for new postgraduates at the start of the registration week.
