WIND BAND

The Wind Band is a thriving and popular group with a membership of about 75. It tackles the full range of the wind band repertoire from popular music from films and shows, to works specifically written for band, including several composed especially for the group. Most recent of these was the suite Aberystwyth Castle, commissioned by the University and the Arts Council of Wales from film composer Michael J. Lewis, born in Aberystwyth and now working in Hollywood. The suite celebrated the Band's second visit to the Republic of Ireland in 1998 and is featured on its second CD, Castell Aberystwyth, available from the Music Centre. The Wind Band returned to Ireland in April 2009. There are no auditions to join the band and membership is open to anyone. Most of the players are students but there is also enthusiastic participation by a wide section of other local musicians. The group achieves excellent standards in a relaxed and sociable rehearsal atmosphere. The Band is strong in all sections but there is always a welcome for new members. Anyone interested should contact the Music Centre or simply turn up to a rehearsal. There will be carols for everyone to join in and choral items from the University Choral Union.
