Cafodd Stephen radd dosbarth 1af BA (anrhydedd) mewn Addysg a Daearyddiaeth, a dyfarnwyd cyllid iddo gan y Cyngor Ymchwil Economaidd a Chymdeithasol (ESRC) ar gyfer MA (a basiodd â rhagoriaeth) a Doethuriaeth (cyflawnwyd yn 2011), oll ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth.

Mae gwaith ymchwil Stephen wedi canolbwyntio'n bennaf ar feysydd rhywedd a'r fyddin, a fu'n darddle i nifer o'i themâu addysgol, daearyddol a chymdeithasegol allweddol. Mae ei ymchwil wedi canolbwyntio'n arbennig ar feysydd megis y cartref a'r teulu, emosiynau a'r cof, gallu plant i gael at addysg a gwasanaethau, ac addysg a hyfforddiant i oedolion. Drwy gydol y themâu hyn, mae Stephen wedi trafod dadansoddiad beirniadol o saern?aeth cymdeithasol rhywedd, gyda phwyslais penodol ar y ffordd mae gwrywdod yn cael ei arddangos mewn ystod o hunaniaethau diwylliannol, yn dibynnu ar y cyfnod a'r lleoliad.

Mae ymchwil Stephen yn datblygu'n nifer o themâu, yn cynnwys;
