This is a 20 credit module where students are taught in smaller groups. There are four 5-week sessions over the two semesters with each unit based on a specific theme. Each specialist topic has a co-ordinator who will be the main teacher. There will normally be at least 8 in the year with 2 specialist topic units running parallel in each session. These will take the form of five one and a half-hour workshops with some student presentations and regular preparation. The aim of the course is to develop reading and research skills in relation to a defined topic or period and to formulate and exchange ideas in group discussion Topics include: Art and the Domestic Space, Gender and Art, the Self Portrait, Renaissance Option, Camera Culture, Visual Culture of Religion, Print and Conflict, Going Wild - Nature, Landscape and the Artist.

• Examine specific periods or themes in art hsitory or visual culture in some depth. Topics are drawn from the folowing areas: Modernism and the domestic, German art int eh Weimar period, the Self Portrait, florence in the 15th Century, Camera Culture, Visual Culture of Religion and Science Fiction, Print and Conflict, Shakespeare Illustration.
• Put into practice basic principles of art history and art history and visual culture being discussed in AH10120 and apply them to sepcific topics.
• Develop an active and participatory learning environment to equip student with the social and academic skills to engage in informed discussion.
• Encourage a thoughtful, informed and orderly articulation of ideas in written work.
