- an understanding of abstract nature of the discipline and medium
- ability to find imaginative solutions within the confines of a specific brief
- ability to sustain a project over an extended period of time
- ability to complete work to a high standard within a give time period
- ability to work independently of others both in the studio and away from it
- a body of fundamental skills in preparation for specialised study in the disciplines at Level 2 and 3
- a capacity to analyse and assess his/her own work both in progress and on completion
- comprehension of the relationship between current studio practice and its historical background, and to the continuing validity of that heritage
- an informed basis on which he/she can advance and develop personal expression
- confidence to interact in discussions about art both with the tutor and fellow students
- heightened powers of evaluation and discrimination in terms of both the student's work and that of their peers
Brief description
Art Practice I and II is divided into Drawing, Painting, Graphics, Photography. Together they form the first year course in Art Practice. Through set projects the student examines the vocabulary and grammar involved in the production of painting. Various techniques and processes are examined including methods and materials, illustration, printmaking and photography.
Art Practice II builds on the experience gained in Art Practice I and prepares students for entry to the Art degree schemes in Part II.
Aims
The module aims to:
- provide an initial in colour-based disciplines encountered at Level 2, in particular painting
- introduce the fundamental principles of objective painting through the analysis of colour, tone, form and paint application
- facilitate an understanding of painting as a visual language possessing grammar, syntactical components, internal rules and logic
- create an ability to select and employ each of these grammars both singly and in conjunction with each other as a means of articulating and expressing form
- encourage competence and confidence in painting
- develop an understanding of this medium as a means of recording, and the facility to make an accurate and objective visual record in a variety of different environments and situations.
- cultivate an understanding of the concepts of colour, tone, form and paint application and the ability to differentiate them in the practice of painting
- nurture the acquisition of a knowledge of the various processes involved in lino-cut, etching, photography and developing
- instil a comprehension of the cultural heritage of painting and its continuing importance to contemporary art practice
- enable students to make an intelligent and personal response within the confines of a prescriptive brief
- manage time and meet prescribed deadlines
- develop the ability to receive criticism and engage in self-criticism constructively and dispassionately
- enable students to verbally articulate their response to their own work and that of others.
