Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

demonstrate a clear understanding of the social, cultural and aesthetic perspectives on gender representations in theatrical texts and performance.
evaluate and respond to a range of gender discourses in theatre and theory, using a critical and analytical vocabulary.
co-operate as part of a group in presenting an argument drawing on the analysis of course material.

Brief description

This module will explore the ways in which gender is represented in theatre and performance and introduce students to key issues of gender theory through a detailed study of a number of dramatic and performance texts.

Aims

To develop students' critical appreciation of gender representations in theatre and performance and to introduce them to key issues of gender theory.
To examines theatrical representations of gender in a selection of dramatic and performance texts from Shakespeare to the 21st century.

2. Images of Women in Theatre/History
3. Staging Feminism(s)
4. Staging Masculinities
5. Lesbian and Gay Theatre
6. Theatre, Eroticism, Sexuality
7. Explicit Bodies in Performance
8. The gendered voice/body (workshop).
PLUS additional workshops and / or lecture demonstrations by invited guest lecturers / artists

Communication	Communication skills will be developed in seminar sessions (class contribution) and group presentations.

Personal Development and Career planning	Students will have the opportunity to explore specific areas which reflect and strengthen their individual career needs.

Research skills	Students will demonstrate the results of research into an agreed aspect of the course material in the form of group presentations. They will also demonstrate the results of individual research in the form of essays and in an exam situation.
Subject Specific Skills	Students are encouraged to develop the use of a critical and analytical vocabulary in their written and oral response to gender issues in drama/theatre.
Team work	Research for group presentations will develop group work skills.
