Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • understand the key concepts and models in health education;
  • understand how the health message is promoted by referring to a wide range of epidemiological studies;
  • demonstrate the influences of health education and promotion on society; and
  • examine the key roles of: schools, families, health care organization, and industry, to effectively promote health education.

Brief description

The last 20 years has witnessed an on-going debate as to what constitutes the best strategy for improving the health of the nation. Among the issues examined are: key concepts in health education; the influence of diet, exercise and physiological stress on health; indicators to good health; epidemiology and its role in health education; risky behaviours; health education and promotion; factors influencing the health promoting message; the influence of health promotion on society; health and academic performance; and health promotion in schools.

Aims

  • Extend the academic contents of the existing ten-credit module into a twenty-credit module;
  • Provide students with more time and opportunity to undertake a health-related survey;
  • Enhance the active participation of students in group-project work that will enable them to acquire key interpersonal and research skills.

  • Health education and promotion: identifying key models
  • The influence of health promotion on society
  • Factors influencing the health promotion message
  • Health promotion in schools.
