Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

demonstrate familiarity with the conventions of postgraduate study in European Languages;

demonstrate that they have acquired information retrieval, bibliographical and referencing skills in the field of academic research in European Languages;

demonstrate that they have gained experience of how research results are disseminated;

demonstrate that they can reflect upon the effectiveness of different ways of presenting research in European Languages.

Content

This module aims to provide postgraduates in European Langugaes with skills which are necessary for advanced study in modern languages.

Content:

1. What is research in European Languages? Project formulation. Where to start? (2-hour seminar)
2. Subject-specific information skills session, including bibliographical sources (2-hour seminar)
3. Referencing and bibliography (1-hour seminar, 1-hour practical)
4. Tutorials relating to chosen assessment assignments (2 hours)
5. Attendance at Departmental Research Seminars, producing written feedback from a minimun of 2 seminars, including an assessment of effectiveness of presentation (6 hours work)

Personal Development and Career planning Students will be expected to show an ability to manage their own time effectively and to engage in independent lines of research in preparing their assignments.
Problem solving Selection of reading material, answering questions posed by written assessment, seminar work.
Research skills Researching for assessed work.
Subject Specific Skills Students will be required to read material in French and/or German and/or Spanish in order to prepare for seminars and/or assessed work. They will have to be familiar with subject-specific bibliographical resources and referencing systems.
Team work This will apply in the seminars.
